So a) I'm going to Sirens again, and b) once again, I have no idea what I should do there, programming-wise. This year's theme is Monsters, but I'm not sure what I could do on that topic; on the flip side, while I don't have to stick to that topic, I'm not sure what I could do off it, either.

Any suggestions from the peanut gallery? Workshops, panels or roundtables I could try to recruit other people for, whatever. The deadline for proposals is May 7th, so I need to figure out something soon.

Want to come in on a panel on female monsters in anime and manga with [livejournal.com profile] coraa and me? If so, email me and I'll share a brainstorming google doc. Rphoenix2 at gmail.

Hmmm. My knowledge of anime and manga is narrow -- but otoh, if that panel would be an appropriate time to talk about the "women with swords inside them" motif, I'm totally game.

We're trying to keep it slightly narrower than "any women with magic or superpowers." We're thinking along the lines of non-human, or society sees them as monstrous, or they see themselves as monstrous, or they look really weird, something like that.

Are you familiar with any of these:

Fullmetal Alchemist, Claymore, Fruits Basket, Spirited Away, Soul Eater, Mushishi, Afterschool Nightmare? Or any others with monstrous women?

Only Spirited Away, out of that list. What I'm familiar with mostly consists of: Rurouni Kenshin, X:1999, Tokyo Babylon, Ooku, Cowboy Bebop, Shoujo Kakumei Utena, Miyazaki's films, and small amounts of Le Chevalier D'Eon and Princess Tutu. None of which seem to do the monstrous-female thing much.

By "women with swords in them," I'm interested in the way those women don't have magic or superpowers -- they're just the sheaths that contain weapons for others, and the weirdifying effects of that -- but yeah, it doesn't seem quite in line with your topic. Alas. :-(

...why don't you do your own anime panel? I'm sure there's enough interest for two.

See above about my knowledge being very narrow. I don't really know the field well enough.

What about a panel on fight scenes? (As opposed to the workshop you did last year.)

I would love to see/participate in something about that! (Anime/manga related or otherwise) I see it pop up in a lot of the stuff I read/watch and it'd be interesting to explore it further.

Also, if you ever have time, I highly recommend reading Full Metal Alchemist! Amazingly complex plotting and a diverse array of strong female characters.

I also wholeheartedly recommend Fullmetal Alchemist. Alchemy, martial arts, family relationships, complex moral questions, a tightly-woven plot, and a diverse group of SERIOUSLY kickass female characters.

The first anime is good, but I think the SERIOUSLY kickass female character quotient kicks up a few notches in the manga.

Butting in to say that I'd love to be on the panel, if you're still looking for people and you'd want me. Should I send you an email?

How about "people as monsters"?

Or you could go all anthropological and discuss the relationship between unconscious racism and nonhuman monster races.

Along this thread, it could be time to bring in the 'Fish in a Barrel' critique of depictions of Drow as the gaping black hole of otherness.

hey! me too!! dammit, i really need to put together some kind of panel or roundtable already. i'm on a publishing-related panel already, but i was thinking a biographical presentation about historical female sff writers (playing off the line in POSSESSION that the "monster" is the female writer ;).

drop me an email if you happen to want to collaborate. i'm happy to NOT do something publishing-related (or to do something publishing-related, either way). or i'm ALWAYS good for a WoT-fest, as well you know. email is juliet.grames@gmail.com (no pressure)

When the first Whirlpool Duet album was released in December 2001 came as a surprise to the public. On the one hand, modern design and style, the load on the front was a big plus, on the other hand, however, a set of retail prices has become something of a shock to many people -
