If the shipping costs from the UK were prohibitive for you (and let's face it, they've gotten absurd), then may I present an edition of The Waking of Angantyr that might be available closer to home?

That's right, it's U.S. book day for my Viking revenge epic! Ebook and paperback; the audio edition will be out on December 19th. But if you need something to listen to while you read the words on the page or screen, may I offer my soundtrack for the novel, available in its entirety on Spotify? Curl up with a hot drink and journey to a land of ice and blood . . .

Book View Cafe is fifteen years old! Which means we can trust it in the kitchen. Long-time readers of the blog know that we've had a tradition of posting recipes; now two dozen of us have come together to publish a cookbook. For my own contributions, I chose dishes that have acquired odd names in my household; buy the book to discover the delights of Lorem Ipsum Salad, Garbled Pasta, The Four Cs, Yoon Stew (yes, named for Yoon Ha Lee . . . though not made with bits of him), and The Transitive Property of Marjoram!

And in other news, I finally have a publication date for the audiobook of The Waking of Angantyr! It will be out on December 19th, just in time for Christmas (you know, if the holiday season makes you crave bloody Viking revenge epics -- well, given family stresses, it might . . .). The pre-order links haven't yet gone live at retailers, but I will remind closer to the pub date!

My god, I was so busy yesterday that I didn't even manage to post here about The Waking of Angantyr coming out in the UK. In my defense, I was not busy by choice; instead I got called in to jury duty for the first time in my adult life -- all my previous summons have resulted in the website telling me the day before that I don't have to report in. Well, I suppose it's fitting that publication day for my bloody Viking revenge epic began with me waking up early enough to induce homicidal feelings . . .

But even if I'm a day late in posting this, the good news is that book is still out! Yes, in this day and age where we place an unhealthy emphasis on how everything performs in the first twenty-four hours, I think it is just dandy for people to buy a book on day two! Or even day two hundred, for that matter. And Titan Books have given it such a lovely cover, how could you resist:

If the answer to that is "because I want a print copy and dear god international shipping now costs both arms and a leg," don't worry, a US edition is in the works. (As is an audio edition, if that's your preferred narrative delivery method.) But look at that cover! You know you want it, and all the bloody grimdark vengeance within.

(Even if it's a day late.)

I've been so busy promoting the pattern deck Kickstarter up one side of the internet and down the other that I've completely forgotten to update about its progress here! We're at the halfway point of the campaign (it ends on September 5th), and as of me posting this, we've made it to 89% of our goal. Which is fabulous, but also I won't breathe easy until we're past the 100% line with a bit of cushion to spare. My thanks to everybody who's been spreading the word about this -- and don't forget, all of our add-ons are available at every tier! So even if the deck itself isn't of interest, you can back at $1 and still get access to signed books or bookplates, tea samples, personalized readings or horoscopes, art commissions, Tuckerizations, or your very own peacock brocade frock coat!

Meanwhile, we have some other promotional events lined up for the Kickstarter and the release of Labyrinth's Heart. This upcoming Thursday the 24th, from 4-7 p.m. Central time (5-8 Eastern, 2-6 Pacific, 9-midnight UTC), we'll be playing Rook & Rose D&D online, courtesy of New Orleans bookstore Tubby & Coo's! Our special guest player for this event is the wonderful author and editor Fran Wilde, and I have no idea what will happen in the game except guaranteed hijinks.

Alyc and I will also be at DragonCon, though I don't quite have a finalized schedule yet. If you're attending and would like anything signed, feel free to catch me after a panel or ping us to arrange a meetup; I know that getting into the dealers' building can be an incredibly time-consuming process, and we don't mind signing items in passing to save you hours of waiting in line.

Finally, two pieces of non-Rook & Rose news: first, from now until the 27th, the ebook of A Natural History of Dragons is on sale for only $2.99! And second, looking ahead to October, I'm going to be in conversation with Kate Heartfield to promote our mutual Norse-inspired works, her novel The Valkyrie and my The Waking of Angantyr. That's organized by Brookline Booksmith, and it'll be on October 27th at 5 p.m. Pacific (8 Eastern, midnight UTC).

I know there are other things I need to scrape together to post about, but brain am mush, so they will have to wait . . .

You may have noticed that I have no novels coming out this year. That is because 2021 was, through an accident of scheduling, the Year of Three Books . . . or rather I should say a Year of Three Books, because in 2023, I'm doing it again.

Yep, folks: in addition to Labyrinth's Heart and The Game of 100 Candles, next year will also see the publication of the bastard child of my college thesis, a standalone Viking revenge epic called The Waking of Angantyr. Long-time readers may recall that I wrote a short story by the same name; the story is based on a very cool Old Norse poem, and the novel is based on me being terribly disappointed by the saga the poem is found in. :-P

I'll post more about that later. For now, the thing to know is that the book will be coming out on October 10th of next year from Titan Books in the UK -- I'll also post more when I know for sure what the U.S. situation will be (that's currently up in the air).

It's going to be a busy year!
