When the soldiers arrive, the old woman is waiting.

Although I couldn't resist giving this story that title, it doesn't have anything to do with Ernest Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea (a novel I never particularly liked). Instead this is a bit of mythology and history, wrapped up in a flash package. It will be coming out from Daily Science Fiction!

Thanks! Though grrr, I keep forgetting that the cross-poster plugin I'm using now cross-posts everything, not just blog updates -- this wasn't supposed to go to my journal (as I haven't signed the contract yet, and I usually hold off on announcing things until that's done).
