A Year in Pictures – Tower and Head

I have no idea why there is a giant sculpture of a severed head at the foot of the Town Hall Tower in Kraków. It’s hollow and big enough to climb inside (if you look closely at the photo, you can see somebody peering out through one of the eye sockets), and it’s one of the more inexplicable bits of public art I’ve ever seen. Dusted with snow, though, it lands in a weird zone between “creepy” and “charming.” ![]()

Date: 2014-12-02 11:32 pm (UTC)The sculpture is called "Eros Bendato" (Eros Bound) and is intended to mimic ruined Greek/Roman sculpture. If there's a deeper meaning to why that particular sculpture is in that particular spot, I have not uncovered it.

Date: 2014-12-07 09:05 am (UTC)I saw somebody adapt it for a fantasy artwork a while ago, too -- can't remember the context, but it is very clearly modeled on this sculpture, placing it in an overgrown forest instead.
