The roses were not yet properly in bloom at Filoli — we were there in tulip season — but this one rosebud had caught a bit of water in its opening petal, which made for a nice little detail shot.

This is a really nice composition! I especially like the complexity of your aperture range of background colours. You managed to get some detail in there while still getting the nice blurred effect. Well done!

That's all due to my father, who explained aperture and shutter speed and ISO to me, then gave me a (hand-me-down) camera where I could control those things. That lesson was a major leveling up in my photographic ability.

I've been picking up some basic photography skills as well, and I'm surprised by how much more fun (no idea if that's a grammatically correct sentence... you'd never know that I'm a language therapist) it is to take pictures with those technical tweaks! The pictures end up being much more artistic :)
