Some of you may recognize this fellow from In Ashes Lie. It’s the Uffington White Horse, a stylized figure carved into the chalk hillside. The only really good way to get a photo of it is from a helicopter or plane, but I did my best . . . .

Amelia and I went there on our honeymoon, also to Weyland's Smithy nearby.

I don't think I knew that! It's a lovely area, isn't it?

It was absolutely lovely. It was a nice warm June day and we had stopped and gotten some warm pasties from a food truck along with some other picnic stuff.

Subtract the food, and it sounds like the day I had there. What I remember most is the scent -- sweet cicely, I think my friend said it was -- a beautiful light touch on the air.

I have loved the Uffington White Horse ever since reading Sun Horse, Moon Horse, Rosemary Sutcliff's novel about how it might have been created, but have never seen a picture from this angle - thank you!

They're kind of nifty. You can totally understand why they collect random folklore in later centuries.
