Same song, second verse. A little bit louder, a little bit more JESUS H CHRIST THIS ISN’T FUNNY ANY MORE.

Which is to say, I will be having ankle surgery.

Again.

Same ligament as before . . .

. . . just on the other foot.

Listen up, kids: sprain your ankles too often as a youth, and this will be your reward before you’re anywhere near your dotage. An orthopedist wiggling your foot around and saying “Wow!,” followed immediately by “Sorry, that’s not what you want to hear your doctor say, is it?” An unstable ankle joint that’s causing microabrasions and is already building up a bone spur, so let’s get this surgery done soon, shall we, before we’ve got ourselves a lovely case of arthritis? Oh and it’s so helpful that you still have the boot from the last round. We can just stick you right back in it. Not your first rodeo, here’s your forms, you know how this goes, and hey you’ve even got some blog posts to remind you of the unpleasant things in your future. Isn’t this great.

The surgery isn’t scheduled yet, but it will be some time between the very end of July and mid-September. Putting it off that long probably isn’t the most intelligent thing I’ve ever done, but god dammit I am going to Okinawa. The last time this karate seminar happened was five years ago; I don’t know when it will happen again. And I am not letting my stupid fucking ankles keep me from it.

A) Your icon is even more applicable than ever,

and,

B) Jesus, I'm sorry. That is a completely unfair thing for the universe to pull.

I have no idea what is going down in Okinawa, because I live under a rock. Are the intervening months going to be a stressor, automatically, or is it something about that particular seminar that might? Because there's a great big difference between probability and possibility, and if it's the former, by damn, take the chance. But it it's the latter, can I, without going concern-troll, express concern? I only ask because a chronic condition of my own has recently reared its ugly head and made me rage against the need for constant vigilance ....

I guess I haven't actually posted about Okinawa. I should do that, I guess.

I told my orthopedist that I would be going to a week-long karate seminar in July, and that I would not do the surgery until afterward. He was okay with it. (The soonest I could have the surgery is probably early June anyway.) I'll be doing PT before then to stabilize my ankle joint, so the muscles can compensate for the damaged ligament; it won't fix the underlying problem, but it will hold things together until I have the surgery.

Oh jeez. Sympathies and condolences.

If there's anything that would make life more bearable during your recovery, do say.

I will probably be looking to arrange a social life, yes, as there will be at least four weeks in which I can't go to the dojo (my most regularly-scheduled source of human contact apart from Kyle).

Oh, that sucks. I'm sorry. Do feel free to call on me if I can help out during your recovery. (I can fetch; I can carry; I can pick out a carefully curated selection of the least shambolic Classic Doctor Who episodes; I can pick out a carefully curated selection of the most shambolic Classic Doctor Who episodes.)

Oh no! :( I'm so sorry. How long will the recovery be?

If it's like last time -- which it should be -- four weeks in a plastic boot, then ~four weeks in a brace, with PT ongoing during that latter span and possibly for some time after.
