The “backwaters” of Kerala are a region of canals, where locals get around by canoe. My husband and I went down there to spend a day and a night on one of the houseboats that ply the area, and it was one of the most beautifully relaxing experiences I’ve had in years.

My neighbor is from Kerala, which also has a fascinating history. She is Christian, and one day it struck me that her ancestors may have been Christian before mine were (in Britain).

It also seems like Kerala is a social paradise, in a way that really appeals to those of us who wonder if we in the West might not be "over-civilized"... I once saw a documentary about Kerala that showed that even though the people there tend to be "poor" by our standards, their life expectancies and literacy rates are very high.

I wasn't in Kerala for remotely long enough to have more than a superficial impression of it, but I was interested to hear that it is (or has been -- I think it goes back and forth?) a communist state.

I'd forgotten that -- sounds like they may have gotten it right!
