I’ve decided to give away an ARC of The Tropic of Serpents to one lucky respondent. To enter, all you have to do is name your favorite dragon, either in the comments or @swan_tower on Twitter. You have until I wake up tomorrow, so say roughly 11 a.m. PST.

Do you mean from your books, or in literature in general?

Literature in general, I'd say Kalessin, the Eldest from Le Guin. Your world, I love the rock-wyrm that shows up unexpectedly (mostly) in Chapter 22.

Mountainshadow from Earthdawn, of the clutch of All-wings, despite the silliness he got up to in the Sixth Age and, perhaps, because of it. His will remains one of my favourite gaming supplements.

Then again, I do have a soft spot for Yevaud, specifically from "The Rule of Names" by le Guin.

"Yes," said a great, husky, hissing voice. "My truename is Yevaud, and my true shape is this shape."

You didn't say anything about country, so this is open internationally, right?

And I'd have to say Tehanu, from Earthsea.

Eeeeeee oh my goodness, I love dragons. I think my absolute favorite is Temeraire from Naomi Novik's books, because he's a smartass, but the sparklings are really close-- even if they're not technically real dragons, I just love the idea of little flying jewels.

I'm gonna go with Sheepstealer, though really that's probably because I like Nettles.

My favorite dragon is the Pernese Fire Lizard. :)

Probably Morkeleb from Dragonsbane, though admittedly I'm not sure if my "because he's the awesomest" feelings are primarily inspired by sexy Michael Whelan cover art.

Seconding fire lizards-- specifically Menolly's clutch. :)

Oh, that's hard. But I have a fondness for Temeraire.

Oh, there's too many fascinating dragons in fiction--and in cover art. :-D And right there next to my comment is my favorite icon-dragon that Djinni drew for me.

But I'm going to go with the incomplete bead-and-wire full-size fire-lizard that I started long ago. She stole my heart and is waiting patiently for me to have oodles of time to finish her.

To be honest, if very immodest, I'd have to say that my actual favorite dragon is my own one from the Secret Country books, Belaparthalion. Barring that, it would have to be Kalessin from Earthsea.

Belaparthalion is a splendid dragon! ....though he didn't pull up when I tried to think of dragons... now if we'd been trying to think of favorite unicorns Chryse would have popped up at once. Perhaps he's filed oddly since I mostly encountered him in human form.

I blame [livejournal.com profile] pameladean for the fact that I can't sing "Good King Wenceslas" properly anymore. :-P

Well, that's a good point. He's rather a stealth dragon.

I like Kazul from the Enchanted Forest books, too.

Loiosh is very definitively not a dragon, so I'd have to go with Temeraire.

So many! I'd have to go with Irian from the Earthsea story 'Dragonfly', because she's so awkward, so angry, so human, and so damn cool.
I want to be a dragon when I grow up. I'm 32.

Selendra (from [livejournal.com profile] papersky's (Jo Walton's) Tooth and Claw). With an honorable mention for the Reluctant Dragon...

I've always been partial to the dragons in Merlin in the Dragons by Jane Yolan. Earliest stories I can remember: http://www.amazon.com/Merlin-Dragons-Picture-Puffins-Yolen/dp/0140558918

My favourite would have to be Idris from Ivor the Engine.
