Normally I'm not a big fan of AU crack, which is to say, fanfics where the author has thrown in something totally random ("what if Frodo and Sam became pirates?") that really doesn't relate to the original source.

There are exceptions.

This is one of them.

It's a fic for the new BBC series Sherlock, the one that updates the characters to the modern day. You don't have to have seen the series, I think, to enjoy the story. But if you've read the Onyx Court books . . . yeah. Especially With Fate Conspire. It's so much of what I think about London, in terms of its history and the relationship between a city and its people, with lots of little details that ring such familiar bells for me. gollumgollum pointed me at it, and I'm so glad she did.

I neither passed go nor collected 200 dollars between the end of reading that fic and sending you the link. (I even considered asking if you'd written it, because i knew you were on AO3 but couldn't remember your name.) Very glad you enjoyed.

Heh. No, I didn't write it; that would fall under "too close to my professional work" for me. If I'd had that idea, I would have executed it as an original story, maybe even somehow Onyx Court-related. (I'm torn as to whether I'd want that continuity to include London being incarnated as a person. Mostly I'm leaning away from it, because I make some determined arguments in Fate for London being too polyvocal to sum up so singularly. But it's still a shiny idea.)

This story is practically a fusion with Kate Griffin's London urban fantasy novels. It's certain the author has read them, and should probably have explicitly listed them as a source.
