Marie Brennan's Patented Three-Step Process for Finishing Stories That Aren't Working:

  1. Realize that you've been doing it entirely wrong.
  2. Start doing it right instead.
  3. Finish the story.

It's really quite simple, when you look at it that way.

And it means that I am not starting off the new year by immediately failing at my goal to write one short story a month. I may fail next month, but let's not gallop to meet future difficulties, shall we? I have "The Last Wendy" finished, and this is a Good Thing.

Dude, I thought you didn't know to deal with even middle of that story? How long did it end up being?

In any case, it looks like SH is doing its job already. :)

The middle wasn't working because I was looking for the wrong middle (and end). It's 3800 right now, of which half-ish had already been written.

In my special subjective reality, of course!

Mucho congratulations! I'd be interested to read it for the next meeting if you want, since we spent some time talking about it this week.

I would like to let it sit for a bit first, I think; when I realized I was going to be trying to finish it before bed, I rushed a bit in the finishing, and the seams where I hacked out some of my old material are rough.

Also, I want to fix "The Memories Rise to Hunt" already, dammit. <g> That story's been waiting its turn for long enough.
