the recommendations aren't dead!

Every so often (very often, at this time of year), my brain says "down with productivity!"

In this instance, that means you get book recommendations.

I'm trying to convince myself I don't have to keep to a monthly schedule, so please disregard the suspicious appearance that I've posted (late) January and February books. In no particular order, and on no particular timetable, feel free to check out Jim Hines' Goblin Quest (likely to appeal to "Order of the Stick" fans), and Ekaterina Sedia's The Secret History of Moscow (likely to appeal to fans of Gaiman's Neverwhere).

Seriously? Because I've been hearing good things about Goblin Quest, but my bank balance has been telling me that if I buy any more books, it's going to break down and have a hissy fit. But if Goblin Quest appeals to Order of the Stick fans, then I'm just going to have to buy it.

Conclusion: if my bank balance starts crying, it's your fault.

Hey, if your bank balance starts crying, blame Rich Burlew (for not updating more regularly) and Jim Hines (for writing a book that tempts you into sin).

But yeah, they had a similar vibe for me. No fourth-wall breaking, as I say in that recommendation, but it's easy to draw the parallels to a game system, and he does a good job of imagining what that would look like from a purely in-world perspective. (Something the Forgotten Realms novels I read for a paper had to tie themselves in knots to do; I mean, really, explaining "spell slots" without using game terminology is damn hard.)

Well, I do have the advantage of having seen you talk about them, so I had a mental key before I even started reading. But it's also my kind of thing to begin with (snot and the like aside), so I was inclined to see those kinds of things anyway.

OotS: yes, I know he does, but that doesn't stop me from being impatient. :-)
