It occurs to me that there are probably any number of people in the world who are convinced I ripped Doppelganger off from the Buffy episode "Doppelgangland."

Which I did not see until years after I had written the book.

(I mean, two red-haired girls who are alternate reality versions of each other? And one's a witch? And the other wears black leather and kicks ass? Make Mirage a vampire, and you're set.)

*g*

It's rather comforting to me to know that I'm not the only person awake a 3 a.m. I suppose you have the entire "working on a novel" reason to be awake.

That's a good reason.

I just have my stupid insomnia.

I live in the past! That's my excuse.

I'm touched that you presume that's why I was awake at such an hour. <g>

I never would have thought that until you mentioned it. If anything, I would have thought "The Replacement," where Xander gets split in two.

Haven't gotten to that one yet in my re-watching of the series. (And come to think of it, I'm not sure I've ever seen it. Is it season four? Because I've only seen bits and pieces of that one.)

I think in fact that it might be season four. Xander is having issues about his replaceability.

That didn't occur to me either, and I saw that ep of Buffy before I read your book.

Oh, I'm sure it isn't as widespread an opinion as all that. It just amused me, in a slightly "wow, don't I look like a derivative hack" kind of way. <g>

You know I never thought of that. I only vagely remember that episode. However, now that you mention it. . .

So, I was watching Buffy on DVD the other day and I got to the episode "Doppelgangland," and it made me realize what an unoriginal hack you are. I mean seriously just turn Mirage into a vampire and you've essentilly got the premise for Doppelganger. Is this a normal thing for you? Do you actually come up with original ideas? If I keep watching Buffy, or another Joss Whedon show, am I going to run across Warrior and Witch in TV form too? Seriously, you'd think people could have success based on their own ideas, but apparently not everyone. Some people just feel the need to jack story ideas from other people. Way to just be completely unoriginal.

The preceeding rant was brought to you by the letter S, and the number "I should be working instead of posting comments on someone's livejournal." Several things in it weren't true. I'll let you guess which ones.

I blow a raspberry in your general direction, sir.

LOL. I'd never thought of that. Wouldn't you also have to move the setting to California and involve wish-granting demons?

But then everybody would know I was stealing Joss's idea!

Hey, if it makes you feel better, I don't watch Buffy. So therefore...I didn't come to that conclusion. LOL

Uh, I never thought that once.

I followed a trail of links about Burt's SFWA presidency bid to [livejournal.com profile] grrm's post in December where you made some wonderful comments, and you signed your name to one of them. I looked at it, recognized the name, looked at the book sitting on the arm of the chair, waiting patiently for me to continue reading when I was done with web-surfing, and had the serendipitous realization that I was at that moment reading your book. So this is just a note to say that I'm enjoying Doppelganger and that I look forward to reading your other books. And that I applaud your level-headedness in that heated discussion thread.

Having never seen Buffy, I can't make the comparison. But the friend who bought me your book is a Buffy fan, and mentioned that he picked it up for that reason. So, hey, the resemblance isn't all bad. ^.^

Welcome! I am amused by the serendipity the Internet tends to facilitate. :-)

Staying level-headed when talking about SFWA and/or gender politics is hard, but I do my best.
