Fred Rogers, the uncanonized saint of American television, said it best: When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’

(via Making Light)

That is, in essence, what these tikkun olam posts are for: they’re a place to find helpers, to remind yourself that they’re out there, and even to motivate yourself to be one of them. So that when you’re like ickle Fred Rogers, the world might seem a little less scary.

So share your news of how you’re helping, be it big or small. Are you doing volunteer work, either through a formal organization or an ad hoc arrangement with someone you know? Are you changing your own life so that you’ll be a better citizen of your town, state, country, planet? Have you made a donation to some good cause? Don’t feel like everything you mention has to be new; continuing efforts are just as good as one-off or additional things. And remember that everything is fair game, even if it’s not very big. Sometimes the little gestures mean the most.

Writing a letter for Amnesty once a week. Took the small child to the London emergency protest against the US Muslim ban. (He says he likes demos, because there are signs.) Contacted my MP to encourage him to vote against Article 50 (which he was already doing, but support is good). Contacted an airline who does charter deportation flights to ask them not to do that. Extra charity donation to the ACLU.

And I keep on writing...

Riz Ahmed was promoting a drive to help Syrian victims of the chaos in their land. I donated there.

I am trying to live my life, unbowed, despite the fear, so that others who fear might take heart.

I'm calling my representatives, all of them, every week.

I'm reading aggressively-- women, POC, Muslim people especially.

At work I'm (possibly mis)using my display power to put up books by and focused on POC and women, and books focused on queer people. It's not just me, though; the whole group seems to be featuring them. Even our display on inaugurations and the presidency is focused on how it's supposed to work, and our ESL groups and section are getting more feature than ever. Librarian pushback.

I'm also making an effort to smile at POC and women, especially women in headscarves. I mean, I try to do it anyway, but if I do this maybe it'll help just a little. One more person who doesn't hate them.

I'm supporting people on Patreon with small donations - they are deliberately small so I can keep them up even if I'm skint, because I figure we're all in this in the long run, and a dollar here and a dollar there add up after all. I continue working on getting my house in order so I can _have_ more resources to spend on supporting others and more spoons to spend for protesting.

Yesterday I attended a meeting with my MP about Article50 (triggering the exit from the EU) in which she explained why she would probably vote for the bill on second reading (so they could file amendments) and joined the chorus to urge her to vote against it in the important third reading. I don't know whether it did anything good, and I don't think that grassroots party activism is something I want to engage in, but it was dark and cold and rainy and I went to a godforsaken place on an industrial estate anyway. (Opposite a bus stop; the line is a couple of minutes from our house, so it wasn't *that* desolate, it just felt like it.)

I have mainly retweeted a lot of the shit that is going down because I struggled to keep up with it. My plan is to make a weekly post just listing stuff because we're so deeply mired in that gish gallop - the fascist are moving FAST - that it's difficult to keep up.

Oh, and I made an icon for posts related to the Trump White House which I'm showing off here; I needed to express my disgust and this seemed somewhat fitting.

I set up a recurring donation to the ACLU, figuring that small is better than nothing.

I canceled some fripperies from my budget so I could become a member of the ACLU (which means recurring donations, not just a one-off donation). At work, I wear my safety pin all the time, which I modified by adding a little rainbow of beads, because my new mission is QUEER ALL THE THINGS. I'm going to be teaching explicitly about fascism and resistance. At the holidays, I bought "presents" for some of my friends that were actually donations to various charities, including CAIR.

Thank you for doing this post series and for everything you're doing to turn this fucking boat around.
