Yeah, 'cycle' implies FAR more structure than Le Guin bothered with. I vaguely recall her actually writing author's notes to the general effect of, "The Hainish Cycle is a massive tangled ball of yarn; please do not attempt to force continuity onto it; you will only give yourself a headache," for later novels.
*belated lightbulb moment* Oh, and "The Day Before the Revolution" connects to The Dispossessed, in that it's a story about Laia Odo's old age. While she's long dead by the time of The Dispossessed, her existence and her philosophy are very relevant to that book and frequently mentioned within it. But while that's a more clearly signposted link, it's still pretty indirect -- again, neither work directly references the other and both can and do stand alone.
