after murdering the assistant priest at that temple, the First Exorcist raises the spirit of the dead man and questions him.

That's the one thing about this novel beyond the MacGuffin of the pareidolia stone that interests me, because it's an inversion of the usual order and I guess it's easier if the living can refuse your questions and the dead can't. I may have seen something like it before, but since I can't remember what, it is at least an interestingly nasty extension of an ašipu's skills.

When Cook pulls the cloak aside, it’s revealed that he was out raping another woman . . . and has somehow gotten caught inside her, so that he has the body of a dead woman flopping off his penis.

That's amazingly gross, anatomically dubious, and I have no idea what it's doing in the book. I'm so sorry.

So if anybody has any suggestions on what to do with a book I regret ever having bought, I’m all ears.

Pulp it for homemade paper on which you write something similarly Near Eastern but not awful? I can't think of anything practical, so ritual repurposing/ironically apt exorcism seems the best way to go.
