Unfortunately I had a chance to test this today. It did work! I saw a car in the process of backing into a bicyclist, I did scream, and I'm not convinced the driver would even have noticed he'd hit somebody but he did hear me. (The cyclist seems to be fine, I'm very relieved.)
That's not to say that screaming stopped the accident, because it didn't, but it did get the driver's attention--so now I know it does that.
