With respect to Nicholas, let me propose that perhaps it was not as cruel as you think. It depends on how the person sees the world. I can imagine people who might not want to live every day in that technicolor world of magic, but who would take deep and quiet joy in knowing that it existed, even if they only touched it at rare moments.
