Five updates make a post . . . .

1) The Chains and Memory Kickstarter is a bit over halfway to the first stretch goal. The pace of progress has (unsurprisingly) slowed down; I welcome any signal boosting, and/or suggestions for other things I could do to spread the word.

2) While Mary and I were on tour earlier this month, Tor sent a camera crew to film our Portland event and interview us afterward. It was a fascinating experience; this wasn’t the “sit and have a conversation in front of the camera” kind of thing, but rather raw material for the following video:

If you’d like a sense of what our events were like, check it out!

3) Driftwood fans take note: I’ve sold the audio rights for “The Ascent of Unreason” to Podcastle.

4) My SF Novelists post for this month was “Pleaser Don’t Doed Thising”, in which I take aim at Bad Fantasy Latin, Bad Fantasy Japanese, and other such linguistic sins.

5) WisCon! I went. It was a thing.

Sorry, that’s just the tiredness talking. Going to WisCon was a good idea; going right after being on tour, less so. I feel like I didn’t take full advantage of the experience, partly because I was going easy on myself, partly because I’m new to the con’s culture and therefore didn’t know in advance about things like the Floomp. It was fun, though: lots of interesting people, some good panels (and some I really wish had dug further into their topics), some &@#$! awesome GoH speeches, etc. The good news is, now I know what to expect and can get more out of it in future years. Will I be back in 2015? Dunno; I’ll have to look at my schedule. But I do intend to be back eventually.

I enjoyed "Pleaser Don't Doed Thising" very much; thank you! I sometimes edge perilously into such territory with ancient Greek, and should probably be more careful.

I'm glad you liked Wiscon. I usually go, but skipped it this year to go camping.

An inclusive dance party for all genders.

See https://sites.google.com/site/thefloomp/home/floomp-mission-statement for more. I always stop by, even though I am terrible at dancing and the room is often noisier than I can stand for long, because I really love the energy.

I'm glad you had a good WisCon; I'm sorry that I only had a chance to say hi in passing (and that only happened because I was around [livejournal.com profile] elisem's table at the right time), but it was good to see you and I hope you can make it next year as well.

(Introductions, restaurant suggestions, etc available if they're of use to you; this was my fifth(?) WisCon so I have finally figured some of these things out.)

Oh, I used to go to those during the seventies, and I was delighted to see it resurrected at Sirens' Ball (the sirens conference). I had no idea there was a name for it!

I like that video. Now I wish even more that I'd been able to be at one of your tour signings.

I'm hoping Tor sends us out together again next year.

Sorry we weren't able to talk more! I spent more of the con than usual being hermit-y; I just didn't have a lot of social energy to blow this year.

Quite understandably, right after the tour!

That's awesome. I managed to miss the Portland signing by one day (I had gotten behind on my blog reader, which is where I normally keep up on signings) and was swearing up and down -- I'm glad to be able to see a bit of it here. :D

It was awesome to get to see you at Wiscon! After hearing so much about you it's kinda like I already knew you. Only... not.

"Please Don't Doed Thising" is a fantastic post. It's also when I am really, really glad that my college friends are classicists--because I studied just enough Latin to attempt getting away with it, and I have people who can tell me just how very wrong (or right) I've been.

Oh, alas!

Well, I'll keep my fingers crossed that Tor sends me back there next year.

Yeah, great to meet you, too! Now I have a mental image for you that isn't a ferret flipping out. :-)

As for the Latin, my sense is that the stuff which makes my eyes bleed isn't created by the people like you and me, who actually studied if, if only for a little while. It's created by the people who haven't studied Latin at all, and don't know/don't care that those endings are actually significant. It's one thing to screw up your grammar, but quite another to not even be attempting to get it right.
