Asmodean's death, I put into a different camp than the kind of obfuscation we see here, because it's an actual mystery, and one the point of view characters don't have the answer to. The handling of the actual scene is a bit clunky in its overt "oooh, there's something I'm not telling you!"-ness, but on the whole, that's a good time to keep things hidden. The Borderlanders? Are not.
Mat: it's not so much that you can't explain why he was gone. It's that on a textual level, it's a bad idea.
And yes, the ending of WH is a large part of why I remember liking it more.
