Thing is -- and this is what the linked piece really crystallized for me -- it's not just social media, though that's where we've gotten the farthest in talking about the problems. It's not being able to buy something without the company now emailing you three times a day with special offers and other products you might be interested in and pleas for you to review something. It's trying to visit a website and having it ask, every single time, if you're sure you wouldn't rather download their shitty app. It's having a program you know and love, and then it forces an update that removes a function you relied on and hides other things in locations you can't easily find anymore. It's everything tech-mediated getting more obnoxious and less effective, and everyone having to waste more time on dealing with that fact, instead of getting on with our lives. Because more and more in our lives is inescapably tech-mediated.
