Nerdiness at Kepler’s on Saturday

If you’re in the Bay Area and interested in SF/F, Kepler’s Books in Menlo Park is doing an event on Saturday the 15th, with items ranging from a class in how to speak Dothraki to a panel on the topic of which is better: fantasy or SF?

Now, the panelists for this are myself, Ellen Klages, Pat Murphy, and Chaz Brenchley. Ellen and I were talking this past weekend at World Fantasy, and she points out that she knows herself, she knows Pat, and she knows me. And I know Chaz.

This panel is not likely to go according to the description. :-P

I’m not sure whether the plan is for me to brandish a plastic sword at Ellen proclaiming that fantasy is better, while she brandishes a plastic raygun at me proclaiming the supremacy of SF, or whether I’m going to be waving the sword and championing SF while she waves the raygun and champions fantasy. Quite possibly we will do both. Either way, there are likely to be Shenanigans. And plastic weaponry. And a good deal of silliness. We will certainly do our best to be entertaining, regardless. 4 p.m., Menlo Park, be there or never learn the truth of which genre is supreme.

Did she fail to point out that she and Pat also know me? They probably don't know me as well as you do, but we have supped together. More than once.

And, yeah. I cannot see that we will be lining up in any kind of fixed opposition. But yay shenanigans, and plastic weaponry! I can supply phasers if wanted, from m'wife's plentiful armoury... (Tho' most people who have read me would expect me to be marching with the plastic-sword brigade - which makes your point for you, I think.)

I think she had forgotten who the last panelist was, because she said something about "not knowing" the fourth person. I had forgotten who all was on the panel, so when I checked later, I was surprised by the notion that she might not have met you. Under the circumstances, she probably just meant she didn't remember who #4 was.

Aye. Ellen is an old friend of Karen's, and thereby a friend of mine. S'okay, though, I don't mind a bit if she just forgets me. I'm always surprised when people actually remember.

I forgot all the people on the panel, until Ellen started reminding me . . . which is especially embarrassing, seeing as how I suggested you to the folks at Kepler's in the first place.

Oh, I am sad that I have conflicting plans and will have to miss this. Let me know how it goes...maybe we could arrange a rematch at FOGcon?

I ENDORSE THIS SO HARD.

What, you're not coming either? Hey-ho. FogCon it is, then. If it doesn't all end in tears at this mere trial run.

If I'd heard about it earlier I wouldn't have made conflicting plans! FOGcon I know about waaaay in advance. :)

I really ought to have posted sooner.

And I am sad that my conflicting plans have me all the way on the other side of the continent, so I was expecting to have to console myself with hearing reports from others, but a FogCon rematch would also be a very good thing.

I suspect that this trial run will all end in tears of laughter, though.

I know all my fellow panelists! And the panel starts at 3:30, not 4:00, according the Kepler's website. Fantasci-fiction forever!

Depending on where you are looking on the site, the time is listed as both 3:30 and 4:00.
