I have no idea how I would use this, but apparently the OED started being published in 1884.

If I can find a way to work that into the novel, I totally will.

It cracks me up that the OED was published in alphabetical order. I mean, I suppose that's the logical way to do it if you want to publish it piecemeal, but I would have assumed (if I hadn't read Simon Winchester's The Meaning of Everything and The Professor and the Madman) that they'd assemble the entire thing and then publish it in one monstrous go.
