It also depends on the person. As you know from editing my work, I tend to default to female in my lead characters. Once I recognized that in myself, and worked with it...it clicks. Now it really does take effort on my part to write a male lead, and that's usually because that is how the story appears to me.

Am I that unusual? I don't know. It's probably a factor in my lack of recognition, though.
