Having said that: I'm cautiously optimistic about the TV series, because any adaptation is a chance to improve things.

I hope it works out! I am naturally blanking on any examples I might have in mind, but I know there exists at least one case where I prefer adaptation to original for similar reasons of it being better-rounded, more complex, more humane.

What's really going on is the idea of the Wheel of Time itself, where things come around again and again in different forms, so you get lots of fragmentary mythological references floating around in the setting.

Gotcha. What is the relation of the world and its mythology to our own?

Out of curiosity, what led you to this post today? I've suddenly had a rush of comments here, which is odd on a post this old.

It showed up on my friendlist. I commented before seeing the date and then didn't figure it made much difference. I assumed it had been edited in a way that had brought it into the contemporary consciousness of Dreamwidth.
