Yeah . . . there's a lot of free verse to me that's indistinguishable from prose chopped randomly into lines. And I always see things saying that poets in such cases are achieving some kind of aesthetic effect based on where they put the breaks, but nothing ever really tries to explain how, or what effect I ought to be getting from them.
