Surely the wizard can trace his antecedents back to Merlin (Malory's version, rather than Myrddin), and very probably to shamanic figures; maybe the Druids get in on the act somewhere (though I think they were noted for sickles rather than staffs).
Or is that looking at the legend of Merlin through the lens of Gandalf?
