Poll time, short story edition

Okay, Internets. I'm trying to do a short story a month (February's oversized endeavour being an exception), but I'm having trouble deciding what to commit to for March. I don't promise to take the poll's advice, but:

[Poll #1358803]

There are other possibilities, but the rest of them are too far away from being ready to go for me to consider them now.

I read "Deadwood" instead of "Driftwood" for a moment there, and it broke my brain.

Fairy tale, fairy tale, fairy tale!

Um. Not that I'm biased. Or anything.

Hee.

I am deeply startled to find those two leading in the poll. I figured people would look at them, say "eh, old hat," and vote for other things.

I think...and this is just me talking about what I think, that you might try and use your short story writing as a means to exercise craft. Meaning: try writing against what you normally write and including other tropes/conventions from different genre and/or literary movements.

Just a thought...

I'm sure you meant well with this comment, but I must say it's rather ill-advised, since it assumes that a) I haven't considered that possibility already and b) what you recommend is the best thing for me to be trying right now -- which, given all my complaints lately about how short story writing has become too much of a struggle, not enough fun, is a rather poor assumption to make.

Yes, I did mean well.

Immensely wish I had thought of #4.
