I decided to delay this month’s tikkun olam post until the 4th. It seemed appropriate.

We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

A more perfect Union. That’s the goal this country was founded on — and though we may have often and egregiously foundered in pursuit of it, that doesn’t make the goal any less worthy. We must keep striving to establish Justice: to make it clear that Black Lives Matter, Native Lives Matter, Trans Lives Matter. We must ensure domestic Tranquility: stop homegrown terrorism, partner violence, police brutality. Provide for the common defence: but not unending aggression. Promote the general Welfare: through programs like Medicaid, Social Security, and the ACA. Secure the Blessing of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity: protect voting rights, protect the freedom of speech, religion, the press, and peaceable assembly.

If the people in charge won’t do it, then we have to do what we can, in our own lives and in our communities. So share what you’ve done lately, however small, to repair the world: to establish a more perfect Union, in the United States or elsewhere, through donations, volunteer work, good deeds, anything. Share what you intend to do in the days to come. The work is ongoing.

It's a small thing, but we spent our Saturday helping a friend pack up her belongings to go to storage, so she can rent out her house, which should let her keep paying the mortgage and avoid foreclosure. No grand tragedies involved - just a cascade of everyday problems - a divorce, an injury that kept her from working for several months,etc.

This stuff is vital. & not only does that sort of thing shape the thoughts of your readers -- the time to take a breath, take a break, & read about a place where what we want & need is already THERE makes for a really important break in the fighting, & a reminder of what we're fighting FOR, that keeps us going when otherwise, well, we'd burn out crispy.

Village Harvest last weekend (and probably this upcoming, too, since there were a few trees we visited that weren't quite ripe), food bank tomorrow.

Also we have been doing a bunch of yard work, so now the front looks much nicer in a way that the neighbors probably appreciate.

I've been working on improving the terrible, terrible soil common to my area, at least in a few small places.

I've been advocating for our union to be better, by calling representatives and attempting to argue them into doing good.

I march when I can, & when there's a march in the area; that's been happening less & less often lately, & I fear the people who organize such things are beginning to burn out. I can't organize, at least not that way (give me a mess of paperwork & get out of my way, though...) but I can march.

I've been donating a bit from every one my jewelry sales to good places, first the ACLU, & now the Transgender Resource Center of New Mexico. It hasn't been much, but it's more than nothing.

I've also been taking some of the jewelry I make & hanging it out in visible public places -- each with a little sign that says if you need beautiy in your life, & if this calls to you, please take it home. Because we all need a little more beauty.
